  • Patient/client description

Male, 18 years old. Diagnosis: mild intellectual disability, autism. Problems in the parent-child relationship, attachment issues. Psychological issues: depression, trouble with suicidal thoughts.

  • What is the purpose of using VRelax?

The main goal is to widen the Window of Tolerance (enlarge his window), thereby creating more tolerance. The sub-goal is more relaxation. Exploring, recognizing, and acknowledging relaxation in his body.

  • Why was VRelax chosen as a medical device?

This young man is visually oriented and is very busy with gaming and everything that has to do with computers/screens. The VRelax glasses are a nice addition that catches his attention, making him more intrinsically motivated for this tool and therefore treatment.

The commitment of VRelax

  • How has VRelax been used in the organization?

Within Ambiq, a number of therapists and psychologists are linked to Vrelax and these people will work independently. Use of the VR glasses is only under the supervision of a therapist and is not given to clients. If other employees (outpatient care/inpatient) want to use these glasses, we will transfer all instructions for optimal ease of use. The number of glasses is divided among different outpatient clinics. Time/frequency and length is dependent on the person.

  • What was it result?

User was visibly able to switch off quickly when it comes to tension. The effect is that I can continue my treatment well/quickly and effectively. Because I only receive my clients for 45 minutes per week, it is difficult to estimate long-term use. However, it is seen that repetition is good (provided it still appeals to them and they continue to like the videos). The use of VRelax is mentioned as an intervention within the treatment plan.

  • What are the next steps for the organization based on the above findings?

The next step is that we have more contact with VRelax as an organization to share findings/exchange knowledge with each other to stay inspired from both sides. We want to expand the use of Vrelax to also include outpatient care providers. We also want to use it for employees when they want to switch off during work when tension increases.
