Lily Eggink

Primary school pupil / Written by her mother Melissa Eggink

After breaking her elbow twice in 2020 and Lily first had to get her swimming diplomas in 2, it was finally time to choose a new sport a few weeks ago. After looking at some different sports, it was April 2021th time for a trial lesson gymnastics. The first part of the lesson went great! Until Lily was allowed to hang from the uneven bridge. She hung from it with her hands and feet like a bird's nest and as she jumped off she lost her balance and fell.

I knew immediately….the arm was completely crooked and she screamed out. We immediately called the GP and drove to the HAP. There we were immediately referred to the emergency room.
A photo was taken and unfortunately really broken again. Because Lily had unfortunately experienced 2 times before what would happen, she was completely in a panic.

Crying, screaming, totally upset… The arm had to be set. And there was no way she could be silenced. Until a nurse said: "Lily I have something very special for you".

Immediately, Lily was distracted and curious. VR glasses were brought and she was allowed to put them on .... after a short instruction Lily was completely calm looking at the elephants and she was even laughing. This took away a lot of tension for what was to come. She still wanted to take off the glasses while putting them on, but she had become a lot calmer.

We have experienced the use of the VR glasses as very positive. Lily even says: “Mom, if I break my elbow again, we'll immediately ask about the glasses”
I hope with all my heart that we no longer need the glasses….if we do, we will gratefully use them again.
